Actually they are packed extremely well. My daughter sent me 2 of these (different plants) They are packed by Costa Farms, not the Amazon people. I was amazed how they arrived!
Some of these are also available at your local Sam's Club for about the same price from the same manufacturer just FYI. I've been eyeing them for a few weeks now.
None of these appear to be able to be shipped to California

I've had the burgundy rubber plant for a few years now, same nursery (bought from Lowe's), and it's been lovely. It'll drop leaves if you underwater, but as with most houseplants, it's usually better to err on the side of underwatering than overwatering.
That seems like a good price for the whale fin, even if it only comes with one leaf, although sometimes Costa Farms suddenly floods the market with a hard-to-find plant, making it not so expensive anymore.
My guess is that it's the soil used and concerns about soil-borne insects. Something brought in that damaged crops could have a devestating impact on the state so they're more strict.
You may want to check your local Trader Joe's...I remember these types of plants being available @ TJ store this time of year. Hope that helps for those that can't get shipped to your area
Look, this isn't a comment on this deal per se - because the plant I bought from Costa isn't part of this deal (ZZ plant.)
However, I will say that the Costa plant I bought on sale from Amazon last September both arrived in great shape AND has thrived. It's quite literally doubled in size since then.
So, as someone who was skeptical about a mail order houseplant, I'm definitely not opposed to doing it again.
