Yes, agreed, that's why your article states correlation, consume xylitol at your own risk: "At best, this work shows that endogenous xylitol correlates with – but doesn't necessarily contribute to – cardiovascular risk."

If they found something statistically significant in the study they would have said it. 'Correlates to but necessarily contribute to' means 'we spent a bunch of time and money doing this and don't want to say we found nothing'.
