I get the other laptop has a 16 inch screen compared to a 14 inch, but the extra ram and hard drive space seem to make up for it. Is there any other downside to it that I'm not catching?

Duration of macOS software support is a big issue. The M1 is already 3 years old, which leaves you with roughly 4 more years of support from Apple. After that, things will presumably continue to work for "a while" but you won't get any security updates. That's probably okay for a business with typical 3-4 year purchase cycles. It's far from ideal for consumers or anybody who doesn't want to generate e-waste.
Even for content creators and other high-end users, 64GB could be excessive. It doesn't hurt to have extra but 99% of users will never need quite that much.
Wish this was eligible for AppleCare+, I'd jump on it right away.
I don't see why you would want AppleCare+, extended warranties are a waste of money; that's why they offer them because they're pure profit. Most people are going to be treating their precious Macbooks with kid gloves anyway. Are you really heavy handed with laptops? You going to crack the screen easily or spill coffee all over it?

I would jump on this if it's M2 instead of M1 and with warranty.
Thanks for sharing.
You mean if this was Apple M2 Max or Apple M2 Pro? M1 Max is still more powerful than M2 Pro in video/graphics. If you don't need the extra ram or GPU, M3 with 16GB of ram with 1TB is only 200 dollars more than this direct from Apple.

So the M2 gets what? An extra year? Resale value is really good with the Apple Products compared to PC laptops. Just sell it before it gets obsolete; make your Apple e-waste someone else's e-waste.

AppleCare+ is more desirable for this because it's a refurbished product with only 120 days of limited coverage.
One could add AC+ and cancel during the extended coverage period for a prorated refund, or go month-to-month at start for even more flexibility.
That said, I had AC+ on my 2017 MBP and ended up having the logic board and screen replaced because it started overheating, three years after purchase and all covered.
Without AC+, quoted repair cost was about $700 - inflated for sure but even at half cost elsewhere, that's still more than cost of AC+.

The M2 MBP is a little over a year old. So let's say you're good for 6 more years. That's a lot better.
I like to use electronics until they break (or are obsolete), so I don't like arbitrary EOL periods. Just because you find some greater fool to buy your obsolete MacBook in 4 years doesn't solve the e-waste problem. You have to go out and get a different laptop again.
Your point that the M1 Max is a great chip only reinforces the fact that it sucks Apple will likely end software support in about 4 years. Why spend $2k on a new laptop that becomes obsolete just because Apple decides to stop supporting it? Except for Apple's profits, it makes little sense that a basic M3/8GB/256GB MBA will be supported long term but the system in this thread cannot be.

I've owned 4 of the Apple Macbook M-series laptops. All of which were purchased 2nd hand, I haven't had a single issue with them except one of them had a corroded USB port which I fixed myself. I ordered a 7 dollar part to fix the USB port but I must've spent 50 dollars in screwdrivers to open the laptop (Thank you Apple).
These laptops don't overheat and get hot like Intel Macbooks do so I can't really see your specific issue happening again with these new laptops. They are more akin to an iPhone than an Intel Macbook, most people don't end up using AppleCare+ but if you need the piece of mind thing or are really heavy handed with stuff it could be worth it but for most people it's not worth it.

Hey that's awesome. Glad you were able to fix the issue yourself and good to know these MacBooks are more reliable.
Don't disagree about AC+ not being worth it for most people. At the end of the day, it's just like insurance - you pay for the peace of mind and hope you don't need it, but glad you have it when you do.
Regardless, not being able to add AC+ to this product or otherwise have warranty beyond the 120 days from Micro Center does hamper this deal quite a bit.

For what it's worth I purchased this a couple days ago from my local microcenter. Very happy with mine, it's indistinguishable from new other than some minor shininess to the keyboard (which happens to all MacBooks)
I am comfortable that this laptop will last several years and if I feel the need to upgrade at this price I could probably sell it for not much loss.

M1 Max isn't the latest and greatest but it's still a very capable chip, especially when paired with larger amounts of RAM like this machine since the GPU can use it as well. I have a 16" version with the same amount of RAM and it chews through everything I throw at it while being inaudible most of the time.
The mini-LED display is great too. There's a little bit of haloing visible in high contrast pictures that you wouldn't get on an OLED display, but it gets much brighter than the majority of laptop OLEDs, doesn't have any risk of burn-in, and is a good deal better than the IPS panels you find in most laptops.
